Peter Timmer

Charles Peter Timmer (born July 29, 1941 in Troy (Ohio) ) is an American agricultural economist . He is a Fellow at the Center for Global Development (CGD) and Professor emeritus at Harvard University and the University of California, San Diego .

Life

In his youth, Timmer worked in tomato processing at Tip Top Canning Co. in Tipp City . In 1959 he began studying economics at Harvard University ( AB , 1963). From 1964 to 1966 he worked as an analyst at WR Grace and Company . He then returned for an MA (1968) and a Ph.D. (1969) returned to Harvard. From 1968 to 1975 he taught at Stanford University and from 1975 to 1977 at Cornell University . He then came to Harvard as a professor and has been retired since 1998. From 1998 to 2003 he was a professor at UC San Diego and has retired since 2003. From 2003 to 2004 he was Vice President and Chief Economist at Development Alternatives Inc. Since 2004 he has been a Fellow at the CGD.

Timmer's research areas are poverty and economic growth (especially in Asia and especially Indonesia), the supermarket revolution in developing countries and its effects on the poor, the structural transformation and the world rice market .

For his work in Indonesia, Timmer received Bintang Jasa Utama, the highest award in Indonesia, in 1992 for his contributions to food security. Timmer was an advisor to USAID , the 2008 World Development Report , and currently advises the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation .
