Peter Tossanus , also Peter Toussain, Pierre Tossanus, Pierre Toussaint , (* around 1499 in St. Laurent / Lorraine; † October 5, 1573 in Montbéliard ) was a Protestant theologian and reformer.

Life

Toussaint is to be regarded as the reformer of the County of Mömpelgard . As a canon in Metz , he was captured by the Reformation proclamation. Erasmus von Rotterdam recommended him from Basel to Guillaume Budé in Paris . Because of his evangelical sentiments, however, he soon had to leave France and went to Switzerland . In order to be able to orient himself better, he visited Zurich and Wittenberg .

Duke Ulrich von Württemberg summoned him to Mömpelgard in 1535 to build up the new church system there. Tossanus represented the Reformed view. When Duke Christoph took over the governorship, tensions arose between the Württemberg authorities and the pastor. The Augsburg Interim survived Tossanus in Basel , then he returned to Mömpelgard. In 1559, the Württemberg church order was to be introduced there. This attempt sparked a church dispute that lasted for years. To put an end to it, Jakob Andreae came to Mömpelgard in 1571. Tossanus was deposed. Nevertheless, the church regiment did not succeed in asserting itself.

His son Daniel Tossanus the Elder also became a theologian.
