Daniel Tossanus the Elder
Daniel Tossanus the Elder (also Toussaint ; born July 15, 1541 in Mömpelgard ; † January 10, 1602 in Heidelberg ) was a German Reformed theologian.
Life
The son of the reformer of the county of Württemberg-Mömpelgard Peter Tossanus (Pierre Toussaint de Beaumont) studied at the universities of Basel , Tübingen , Paris and Orléans . From 1562 to 1572 he worked as a Reformed preacher in Orléans , interrupted by a long exile due to persecution after the lost Third Huguenot War . After the Bartholomew's Night in August 1572, he fled to Basel, from where he was led by Elector Friedrich III in March 1573 . was appointed court preacher by the Palatinate . He supported his attempt to introduce the Reformed Confession in the Upper Palatinate , which came to an end with the death of the elector on October 26, 1576. From his Lutheran son, the new Elector Ludwig VI. , Expelled in 1577, Tossanus found admission to his younger brother Johann Kasimir , who had inherited the offices of Kaiserslautern and Neustadt and had a reformed university built in Neustadt an der Haardt (today Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ), the Casimirianum named after him . Tossanus became a professor and general superintendent of the new territory, as well as a preacher for a Walloon refugee community in Lambrecht (Palatinate) .
When Johann Casimir after the death of Elector Ludwig VI. 1582 took over the rule of the Electoral Palatinate, he also took Tossanus back to Heidelberg as court preacher. Tossanus also took over a pastor's office at the Heiliggeistkirche and in 1586 a professorship at the Heidelberg Theological Faculty. In that year he was also awarded a Dr. theol. doctorate and appointed superintendent. In 1594 he was the rector of the university.
In order to establish and defend the Reformed denomination in the Electoral Palatinate, he exchanged numerous controversial writings with Lutheran theologians of the neighboring territories (including Lucas Osiander the Elder , Samuel Huber and Jakob Andreae ) and with Catholic theologians. Some of his works have been translated into English and French.
His son Paul Tossanus (1573–1634) and his nephew Daniel Tossanus the Younger (1590–1655) also became professors of theology in Heidelberg.
