Samuel Huber

Samuel Huber (born May 21, 1547 in Burgdorf ; † March 23, 1624 in Osterwieck ) was a Swiss Lutheran theologian.

Life

Huber was born as the son of the then rector of the Burgendorfer Stadtschule Peter Huber and his wife Apollonia. From 1561–65 he studied in Bern , then in Basel, Heidelberg and Marburg. After he had filled the post of vice principal of the school in Bern in 1567, he completed the post of commissioner there from 1569. In 1570 he became pastor in Büren an der Aare , for which he had to sign the Confessio Helvetica posterior . From 1576 he was pastor in Saanen and from 1581 in his birthplace Burgdorf, later vice dean of the chapter Burgdorf. He turned to Lutheran theology and liturgy, which made him the trigger for the Bernese predestination dispute of 1588, as he denied the Calvinist doctrine of the Lord's Supper and the doctrine of predestination .

During a conversation in Mömpelgard in May 1586, the disputes intensified. Huber, who had sided with Jakob Andreae , criticized Théodore de Bèze in particular , whose teachings he described as unchristian and grayish. For this he was punished by the church court in 1587 . Nevertheless, even with the assistance of foreign theologians, no agreement could be reached. In order to create peace, Huber was dismissed from the Swiss church service.

He went to Württemberg, signed the concord formula and got a job in Derendingen . Here he wrote some pamphlets against the Jesuits and Reformed and a Latin work in which he contradicted the Calvinist doctrine of predestination in 1329 theses . This made people aware of Huber in Saxony and appointed him as a professor at the theological faculty of the University of Wittenberg .

It was hoped that his vocation would provide a comrade-in-arms against the Calvinists and Cryptocalvinists . Therefore, he found a friendly reception at the university and was able to acquire the necessary doctorate in theology on September 30, 1592 under Polycarp Leyser . However, he proved to be opinionated and provocative and got into a heated argument , especially with Aegidius Hunnius the Elder and Salomon Gesner . Above all, Hunnius, who had further developed Lutheran orthodoxy in Wittenberg, attacked Huber with his too widely interpreted universalism of grace. Since he did not want to deviate from his point of view and the disputes could not be resolved, he was dismissed from his office in 1594 and expelled from the Electorate of Saxony .

In 1594 he enrolled as a graduate together with his son Salomon Huber at the University of Rostock and later stayed in several places. In 1611 Duke Friedrich Ulrich von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel offered him a kind of grant. After unsteady wandering, he died at the age of 77 in Osterwick near Halberstadt with his son-in-law.
