Joachim Praetorius

Joachim Praetorius (born November 11, 1566 in Lüneburg , † April 18, 1633 in Stettin ) was a German Lutheran theologian, university and high school teacher and hymn poet.

Life

The son of the silk merchant Johann Schulze and his wife Katharine, née Lüders, received their school education in Salzwedel and Lüneburg. From 1587 he studied at the University of Rostock . From there he went to the University of Wittenberg in 1592 , where he received his master's degree in 1594 .

Duke Bogislaw XIII. von Pommern appointed him in 1595, in his capacity as guardian of the young Duke Philipp Julius , as professor of logic and the Hebrew language at the University of Greifswald . In 1596, Duke Johann Friedrich appointed him archdeacon of St. Mary's Church in Stettin and professor of Hebrew at the Princely Pedagogy . He was only able to take up the position after Easter 1597.

Praetorius wrote funeral sermons and other occasional pamphlets. His hymn "So I give myself satisfied" was included in Protestant hymn books, including that of Laurentius David Bollhagen .

Joachim Praetorius married Sophrosyne Stymmel, daughter of Christoph Stymmel and Barbara Weidlich , on September 12, 1597 . Of their three sons, Joachim Christoph became the Brandenburg Consistorial Councilor. Furthermore, the two had four daughters:
