Peter Wackernagel (music librarian)

Peter Wackernagel (born July 26, 1897 in Breslau ; † May 17, 1981 in Berlin ) was a German musicologist and librarian.

Life

Wackernagel was born as the son of the Breslau priest Paul Wackernagel. In Breslau he studied history, German and philosophy and a doctorate in 1921 for Dr. phil. He passed the examination to become a teacher for higher schools. As a volunteer he was at the University Library Wroclaw busy and formed musicologically self-taught and the appropriate means of visiting seminars on. I.a. he was also a student of Max Schneider . His piano playing was perfected through private lessons. In accordance with his skills and recommendations from his library director, he accepted an offer from Wilhelm Altmann in 1924 to move to Berlin to take on a role in the music department of the State Library . He was responsible for the area of ​​manuscripts. He also became a music consultant for the German daily newspaper . He bears the authorship of various music analyzes for the concerts of the Berlin Philharmonic , for facsimile and music editions, book publications and essays. From April 1, 1928, he was a library councilor and after Georg Schünemann's death on January 2, 1945, he was appointed head of the music department, which he held until August 31, 1950.
