Peter Warner (born March 1, 1939 in Colliers Wood , London , † September 22, 2007 ) was a British animal illustrator . His main focus was on cats .

Life

Warner was the son of Horace Leonard and Queenie Rosalind Warner. His father ran a piano restoration business in Streatham , south London. His mother was an artist. Due to his parents' travels in England and Europe, Warner's awareness of art, music and handicrafts was sharpened early on.

Warner spent his childhood in East Mitcham during the war years until heavy bombing in the area in June 1944 killed his maternal grandfather and destroyed his brother David's hearing. The family was evacuated to Sussex and was forced to live in a tent for the rest of the summer.

Warner's interest in wildlife was sparked when he moved to Tatsfield from Mitcham Common . He attended Pollards Hill Primary School and the Caterham School from 1950 to 1956, from 1956 the Wimbledon School of Art, where he obtained the national diploma in design and painting in 1960, from 1960 the Royal Academy Schools, where he received his diploma in art in 1963, and from 1974 the Croydon College of Art, where he received the Intensive Printmaking Course Diploma in 1975.

Warner has received scholarships from Caterham, Wimbledon and Royal Academy Schools and won numerous awards.

Originally, Warner had no plans to become an illustrator, but after graduating from college, he was persuaded by a friend whose father was publishing director at Hamish Hamilton in London to illustrate some children's books. From there his career developed over the years with assignments from France and Japan. He illustrated over 50 children's books and books on wild animals, including five major works on wild cats and domestic cats. His most famous works include cat portraits for the Whiskas and Friskies companies and dog portraits for the Hush Puppies company .

In addition to his work as an artist, Warner was a clarinetist .
