Biographical

After an apprenticeship as a typesetter, Weber studied design and graphic design at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences with Max H. Mahlmann . He has been dealing with concrete art since 1969 and works as a freelance painter and graphic artist. Teaching assignments and a. at the grammar school and at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in the design department.

Since the late 1960s he has devoted himself to Op Art and concentrates on three variants of the intersection of lines and explores imaginary space with the help of chromatics.

The first paper folds have been made since 1975, and from the 1990s onwards Peter Weber developed complex folding techniques and folding systems using the canvas as a medium. The materials plastic (HDPE), cotton and stainless steel will soon be added; from 2001, folds in felt were created for the first time. Peter Weber's works are shown in national and international exhibitions and are represented in well-known collections.

The entire range of Peter Weber's oeuvre, which has now spanned 50 years, was first opened up and recognized in a two-volume catalog raisonné in 2019.

The folds

Peter Weber's folds are always made from one piece and do not require a single cut through the surface. With the help of a highly complex folding technique, geometric-looking works are created, which Weber has devoted particular attention to the material felt in recent years . He is currently working through the mathematical variety of his folds in serial works. The special feature of the “System + Zufall” series made of cotton is the partial “dissolution” of the folds, which illustrates the basic principle of “production from one piece”. In the works made from the translucent HDPE plastic, the front and back of the fold are visible at the same time, thus illustrating its highly complex construction. Peter Weber's folds then experience sculptural expansion in their most recent implementation in centimeter-thick felt, which can now also have strong colors for the first time.

The jazz musician

Since 1969 Peter Weber has been the double bass player in several Hamburg jazz formations. Between 1979 and 1989 he took part in numerous tours and jazz festivals in Europe, including with the “Bob Cats” , Knut Kiesewetter's “Jazzagain” and “Blackbirds of Paradise”. In 1997, after a guest performance with “Jazzbreeze” in New Orleans, USA, he was awarded the honorary citizenship of the city of New Orleans. In 2004 further guest appearances followed in the USA in New Orleans and Dallas. Peter Weber played until today a. a. with Herb Geller , Wolfgang Lackerschmid , Nando de Luca , Hendrik Meurkens , Peter O'Mara , Alex Riel and Wolfgang Schlüter .
