Peter Zimmermann (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Zimmermann (* 1941 in Bremen ; † October 17, 2007 in Osterholz-Scharmbeck ) was a German painter and etcher .

life and work

Peter Zimmermann, born in the Hanseatic city of Bremen and raised in Alfeld an der Leine, completed an apprenticeship as a commercial artist at the Bremen art school . Sobered by the everyday life of an advertising agency in Düsseldorf, the artists' village Worpswede with its lively cosmos became the decisive stop on his way to becoming a freelance painter and etcher. As such, he lived in nearby Osterholz-Scharmbeck from 1984 .

The paintings initially followed the example of his father Erich Zimmermann, who created typical regional landscapes in the tradition of the Worpswede founding generation. After completing this group of works, painting stood in the context of the meticulous, technically brilliant color etchings that were Peter Zimmermann's real passion and that make up his main work.

Zimmermann's art is shaped by the awakening environmental awareness of his time. The continuous theme of the figurative as well as surreal and ultimately abstractly formulated works is the critical examination of the relationship between man, nature and the environment.

Superficial aesthetics are mixed with conscious partisanship for the demand for natural habitats and protected areas for the local Teufelsmoor landscape.

In addition to his own artistic activity, Peter Zimmermann was involved in the head of the Kunstverein Osterholz e. V., of which he was a co-founder. The historic ambience of the gallery rooms at Gut Sandbeck also provided him with a stage for various individual and group exhibitions.
