Peter van Inwagen

Peter van Inwagen (born September 21, 1942 in the USA ) is an American philosopher .

Peter van Inwagen received his PhD from the University of Rochester in 1969 . In 1971 he became professor of philosophy at Syracuse University in New York . In 1995 he moved to the University of Notre Dame , Indiana , where he has held the chair of Cardinal John O'Hara ever since.

Van Inwagen deals with metaphysics , the philosophy of religion and the theory of action . He takes a libertarian position in the free will debate .

In 2005 he was accepted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
