Peter Van Leeuwen (born February 27, 1949 in The Hague ) is a Dutch- Canadian scientist.

Life

Peter Van Leeuwen was born in The Hague in 1949. At the age of seven he immigrated to Montreal with his family . He graduated from McGill University and received his Bachelor of Education in 1971 . After working as a teacher, he emigrated to Germany in 1976. In 1980 he switched to medical research at the Herdecke community hospital and obtained his doctorate in human medicine (Dr. rer. Medic.) At the University of Witten / Herdecke in 1989 . Here he also received his habilitation in electrophysiology in 2005 and an extraordinary professorship at the Faculty of Health at the University of Witten / Herdecke until 2011 . From 1992 to 2014 he was head of the Department of Biomagnetism at the Grönemeyer Institute for Microtherapy.

Research work

The focus of his research is the electrophysiology of adults and fetuses and their mutual influence. Peter van Leeuwen attracted international attention through the proof that fetal heart rhythms are temporarily synchronized with the heart rhythms of the mother. Further work showed that fetal-maternal synchronization is influenced by the mother's respiratory rate.
