Peter von Wöldicke , also Wøldike , (born July 1, 1784 in Vallø near Køge , † September 24, 1857 in Brunsbüttel ) was a judicial advisor, customs administrator and ornithologist .

Life

Peter von Wöldicke came from an old family of pastors. The progenitor came from Husum . His father Andreas Wøldike (born January 27 or 30, 1752 in Hadersleben , † December 29, 1836 in Store Heddinge ) was also a pastor. His mother's name was Anna Sophia Hedevig, née Jacobsen (born January 8, 1751, † October 16, 1788 in Helsingör ).

Von Wöldicke was initially a major à la suite in the Danish army and worked as the royal customs administrator in Brunsbüttel from April 1, 1842. On April 16, 1842, he was appointed Real Councilor of Justice. On April 1, 1853 he resigned from civil service at his own request and received a pension from then on.

Wöldicke was married to Christina Elisabeth Lindemann († April 6, 1854 in Brunsbüttel). The couple had two sons and three daughters.

Working as an ornithologist

Von Wöldicke was friends with the ornithologists and biologists Friedrich Boie and Heinrich Boie , who got him enthusiastic about ornithology. Together with Friedrich Boie, he traveled with Johann Friedrich Naumann to several North Frisian islands. He told Naumann about his own experiences with the bird world in Schleswig-Holstein. He also sent bird hides and eggs to Naumann for his research.

Von Wöldicke received inquiries from Christian Ludwig Brehm , who wanted to encourage him to work. Brehm researched initial descriptions of new subspecies of birds, which he created on the basis of slight morphological differences. Von Wöldicke refused Brehm's request.

Von Wöldicke owned a large collection of birds, which he donated to a Copenhagen museum in 1818. His collection contained rare birds caught near Brunsbüttel, including petrels , shags , night herons , little bustards , Thor's chickens and grebes . From 1826 to 1839 he sent the museum additional bird hides, which are now exhibited in the Copenhagen Zoological Museum .

Publication of Wöldickes are not known. Ornithologists living at the time listed him as an informant. For later researchers, his descriptions were important sources for the development of Schleswig-Holstein's fauna.

Honors

For his services, von Wöldicke received the Dannebrogden and the Swedish Order of the Sword .
