Peterskirche

The Protestant St. Peters Church in Engstlatt , a district of Balingen in the Zollernalb district in Baden-Württemberg , stands on a hill above the town. From the nearby federal road 27 , the 36 meter high tower of the late Gothic church, built in 1471, catches the eye from afar. The bell storey is made of timber and clad.

Look into the choir

The choir is dated to 1471 according to one of the vault end stones. It is not axial to the nave and is higher than this. Under the pulpit, a heavy, iron-studded door leads into a small room in which part of the church, which was probably built in the 11th century, is still preserved: an earlier altar step and an outflow basin in the form of a chalice. This room served as a sacristy until it was renovated in 1912 and was later used as a coal cellar and only renovated again in 1996 - and is now used for devotions or the children's church.

In 1893, a fresco from the time the present church was built was discovered on the north wall of the choir. It shows a crucifixion scene based on the Johannine Passion. It shows similarities to graphics by Martin Schongauer and Michael Wolgemut . The mountainous landscape with the town and castles was interpreted as a realistic representation of the town of Balingen and the castles of Hohenzollern and Schalksburg. The founder, Johannes Mästlin (1440–1480) is shown under the cross. The picture is the most qualitatively outstanding Gothic painting in the Zollernalb district.

Also noteworthy is the wooden field ceiling with baroque marble and floral patterns, as well as a resurrection image, as well as the late baroque organ front on an L-shaped gallery. The altar cross dates from the 17th century.
