Peterskirche Weida

The former St. Peter's Church is in the town of Weida in the Greiz district in Thuringia .

history

The Romanesque church building, dedicated to St. Peter , had two towers at the end of the 12th century, like the Widenkirche, which is now in ruins . One of the towers had a Gothic pointed roof.

In 1267, the bailiffs of Weida , Heinrich von Plauen and Heinrich von Gera, document the foundation of the St. Catherine's Altar in the St. Catherine's Church in Neustadt-Weida by the pastor Sibot and, as liege lords, confirm the endowment of the altar with goods in Kunsdorf (Groß- and Kleinkunsdorf), Schömberg, Neundorf, Bocka (Groß- und Kleinbocka) and in the city of Weida. In 1296 it was placed under the patronage of the Dominican Convent. The church was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and has been in ruins ever since .

After the Reformation , a school building was built on the foundation walls of the nave. In 1829 the north tower was removed. The south tower still bears the church bells today. There is a crypt under the church , which is still partially accessible.

Before the Reformation, this church was the town church of the new town.

After the Reformation it was used as a school and residential building as well as a memorial.
