The Peterson Bulldog Bat ( Pug petersoni ) is a species in the Bulldog Bat family .

features

With a forearm length of 32 to 35 mm, this bat is quite small. The type specimen had a total length of 93 mm, including a 27 mm long tail. The animal had hind feet 9 mm long and ears 19 mm long. As with other family members, there is no nasal leaf . The tail is only enclosed by the tail membrane in the front area and the upper lip has clear folds. The fur on the top is made up of hairs that are light brown near the root and sepia brown further down the line. Some specimens have white tips of their hair, but they do not form light patterns in their fur. On the underside, the fur is lighter brown to almost beige. The Peterson bulldog bat has blackish brown ears and membranes . The ears are connected to one another with a strip of skin near the muzzle. Differences to other members of the genus consist in deviating details of the skull, the teeth and the length of the forearm.

Occurrence

So far, the species is only known from southern Ghana and western Cameroon . It lives in primeval rainforests in the lowlands. The Peterson bulldog bat is rare and is also threatened by deforestation. The IUCN lists this bat in the warning list (near threatened) and suspects it will soon be re-classified as endangered (vulnerable) .

Systematics

The species was first described in 1981 by Mohammed A. El-Rayah under the name Tadarida petersoni , the name is now considered to be basionymal .
