Pethia is a South Asian genus of carp fish (Cyprinidae). Almost all species of the genus occur only in India, Sri Lanka or northern Myanmar . Only the sunspot barb ( Pethia stoliczkana ) extends the range of the genus to Thailand and Laos . The genus, which was only established in the summer of 2012, includes around 40 species, which, summarizedas the Puntius conchonius species group, belonged to the collective genus Puntius and before that partly to Barbus . The generic name was taken from "Pethia", the name for small carp fish in the Sinhala language spoken in Sri Lanka.

features

As adult fish, Pethia species normally reach a standard length of less than 5 cm, exceptionally up to 8 cm. Your body is high back and slightly flattened on the sides. Diagnostic features of the genus are 3 or 4 unbranched and 8 branched dorsal fin rays, the stiff and serrate last unbranched fin ray of the dorsal fin, 3 unbranched and 5 branched anal fin rays, simple gill rakes (pointed, not branched or flattened like a lamella), the broad infraorbital bone No. 3 ( Bones around the eyes), which partially overlaps the gill cover , the lack of free uroneuralia , 4 vertebrae with spinous processes (supraneurals) and 11 to 13 vertebrae in the abdomen and 13 to 16 in the caudal spine. The sideline is complete, broken, or, most often, incomplete with 19 to 24 scales on the sidelines. Rostral barbels are absent, mostly also the maxillary barbels; if the latter are present, they are tiny. The color drawing consists of a black spot on the base of the tail and also regularly of other black spots, dots or stripes on the sides of the body.
