The Odessa barbel ( Pethia padamya , synonym : Puntius padamya ), also known as the ruby barbel because of the red flank stripes on the males , is a freshwater fish from the carp family (Cyprinidae). The species was not scientifically described until 2008 , but has been known in the aquarium hobby since the 1970s. It got its German trivial name because it was first discovered at an ornamental fish market in Odessa . Their natural occurrence remained unknown for a long time. Since no type locality could be given, no initial description could be given.
distribution
The Odessa barb was described in 2008 from specimens that were caught in a man-made pond near Mandalay in the Irrawaddy catchment area in Burma . It was also found in the lower Chindwin .
features
The Odessa barb becomes 7 cm long. Their body has the typical shape of small South Asian barbels. It differs from other barbel of the genus Pethia mainly in its coloration. It is silver-gray to light olive, with dark scales, so that a net pattern is created. On the upper edge of the gill cover there is a bruise, on the sides of the body two black spots, one in the shoulder region, the other, smaller, above the end of the anal fin. Males are more intensely colored and are noticeable by a red longitudinal band on the flanks, which extends to the tail fin stalk. The dorsal, anal and caudal fins of the males are covered with black dots.
The sideline is short. There is a short pair of barbels on the upper jaw .
- Fin formula : dorsal soft rays (total): 11–12; Anal soft rays: 8.
- Scale formula : SL 5–8, scales around the caudal fin stalk 12.
