The sunspot barbel ( Pethia stoliczkana , Syn . : Puntius stoliczkanus ) is a freshwater fish from the carp family (Cyprinidae). Their distribution area includes the Irrawaddy , Saluen and Inlesee in Burma , the river basin of the upper Mekong and the upper Mae Nam Chao Phraya in Thailand and Laos . The specific epithet stoliczkanus was given in honor of the collector of the type specimens Ferdinand Stoliczka.

features

The sunspot barb is five to six centimeters long. Their body is typical of the Pethia species. Her back is colored light olive to moss green, the flanks are silvery and glitter, depending on the light, yellowish to bluish, the scales on the sides of the body have dark edges, the belly is white. Behind the gill cover there is a brown to deep black, teardrop-shaped spot, followed by a golden field. Another black spot is on the tail fin stalk above the anal fin end. The pectoral fins are colorless, the caudal fin has a yellow root. The pelvic fins and anal fin are slightly reddish. In females, the dorsal fin is slightly reddish, in males blood red with a black first fin ray, a black upper edge and some black spots or rows of spots. The sideline is complete. Barbels are absent. The last unbranched dorsal fin ray is sawed at its rear edge.

Systematics

The sunspot barbel originally belonged to the genus Puntius (or Barbus ) and there to the P. conchonius species group named after the magnificent barbel and comprising around 20 closely related species . This group has now become an independent genus under the name Pethia .
