Petitella is a native to the northern tropical South America genus of freshwater fish from the family of Real tetras .

features

Petitella species are slender, have a whitish to light gray base color and are 4 to 4.5 cm long. Characteristic for the genus is the striking red colored head and the black and white patterned tail. A black line runs from the caudal peduncle to the end of the middle caudal fin rays and another horizontal black line marks the upper and lower caudal fin lobe. The black lines are separated from each other by white lines. The caudal fin is forked. There are 17 or less branched rays in the anal fin . Adult males have only one or two humps on each ray of the anal fin. The rear sections of the scales have elongated ridges arranged in parallel. The caudal fin prawns are scaled over a third of their length.

Systematics and taxonomy

The genus Petitella was introduced in 1964 by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry and his colleague Henri Boutière along with the first description of Georgie's red-headed tetra ( Petitella georgiae ). The genus remained monotypical for more than 50 years, although Ahl's red-headed tetra had been known since 1924, a fish similar to Georgie's red-headed tetra, and in 1986, Bleher's red-headed tetra, a third tetra with the characteristic color pattern, was described. The last two were assigned to the genus Hemigrammus by mid-2020 .

During a phylogenetic investigation of the internal systematics of the Characidae, the research in connection with a revision of the genus Astyanax and an investigation of the closer relationship of the neon fish ( Paracheirodon ), a sister group relationship between Georgie's red-headed tetra and Bleher's red-headed tetra was finally established and the latter was found together with Ahl's red-headed tetra in the genus Petitella posed.

species

The fish currently listed under the name Petitella georgiae may be of two species, one from the Peruvian part of the Amazon basin and one in the Rio Purus .
