Ahl's red mouth tetra ( Petitella rhodostomus ( synonym : Hemigrammus rhodostomus )) is a South American tetra species. It occurs in the lower Amazon in the Brazilian state of Pará and in the Río Caura , a tributary of the Orinoco in Venezuela .

features

The red mouth tetra has an elongated, laterally strongly flattened body and reaches a length of 4 cm to 5 cm. Its back is brownish to olive, the belly and sides are greenish-white to shiny silver. The forehead is blood-red when feeling well, the iris is silvery. A dark longitudinal ligament that widens towards the rear begins behind the dorsal fin. The caudal fin is banded black-yellowish-white. All other fins are colorless with a white tip or shimmer slightly green. Females are stockier and stronger than the males.

Ahls rummy-nose tetra looks Bleher Rummy ( Petitella bleheri ) very similar. Bleher's redhead tetra, however, lacks the dark longitudinal ligament on the body. The red markings also extend beyond the gill cover.

Systematics and taxonomy

Ahls Rotmaulsalmler was first scientifically described in 1924 by the German zoologist Ernst Ahl in the "Wochenschrift für Aquarien- und Terrarkunde" and assigned to the genus Hemigrammus . The Terra typica is located near Santarém , where the Rio Tapajós flows into the Amazon. At a center in 2020 published study of the close relationship of neon fish ( Paracheirodon ) found the Bleher Rummy closely with Georgie Rummy ( Petit georgiae ) used is. Blehers Rotkopftalmler and Ahls Rotmaulsalmler were then placed in the genus Petitella .

Aquaristics

Keeping and care

Red mouth tetra are peaceful schooling fish that are suitable for community tanks. They can be kept together with discus, neon tetras, armored catfish and dwarf cichlids.
