Petra Inge Zais (born March 22, 1957 in Steinheidel-Erlabrunn ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ).

Life and work

Petra Zais graduated from high school in 1975, then completed an apprenticeship as a papermaker in the Antonsthal paper mill and worked there until 1980. From 1980 to 1984 she was at the Chair of Political Economy at the SED District School in Mittweida , a cadre school of the GDR regime, employed. From 1985 to 1987 she headed the educational facility of the Stahlgusskombinat Karl-Marx-Stadt and completed her academic training as a graduate social scientist via distance learning in 1987. From 1987 to 1989 she returned to the SED district party school. After the dissolution of this party institution during the peaceful revolution in the GDR in 1989, Zais initially worked in a kindergarten and as a kitchen helper in Chemnitz, then attended the Euro School in Chemnitz from 1991 to 1993 , where she retrained to become a foreign language business assistant. As such, she worked from 1993 to 1994 in a company for environmental technology as assistant to the managing director and from 1994 to 1999 as head of the privatization department in a municipal housing company. In 2000 Zais trained as an internet system supervisor and then worked from 2001 to 2010 as a mobile consultant for the Kulturbüro Sachsen association. From 2010 to 2014 Zais was the managing director of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen parliamentary group in the Chemnitz city council.

Petra Zais lives in Chemnitz, is divorced and has two children.

Party and electoral offices

Petra Zais was a member of the SED from 1977 to 1990. In 2009, Zais described herself as “the ideological pillar of the system” with a view to her active support for the GDR dictatorship.

From 1992 to 1999 Petra Zais was a member of the city ​​council in Chemnitz, initially for the PDS, later for Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. In 2009 she was re-elected to the city council. In 2001 she ran unsuccessfully for the mayor's office of the city of Chemnitz. For the federal elections in 2009 and 2013, Zais was nominated as a direct candidate . Both times in third place on the state list , she missed the entry into the Bundestag.

With seventh place on the state list of the Greens, Zais was elected a member of the Saxon state parliament in the state elections in Saxony in 2014 . There she was a member of the Committee on School and Sport and spokeswoman for her parliamentary group for education, labor market policy, sport and asylum and migration. In 2019, she decided not to run for the state parliament again.
