A railway line operated by the Ukrainian railway company Piwdenno-Sachidna Salisnyzja runs over the 1,430 m long and 5 m wide bridge . The single-track bridge is an important part of the city's transport infrastructure. It is mainly used for rail freight transport and is used several times a day by trains of the Kiev S-Bahn .

history

The construction of the second railway bridge in Kiev , named after the Struwe railway bridge and initially named after the Russian Empress Maria Fyodorovna , began in May 1916 with the aim of creating a closed railway ring around the city. The bridge was completed in January 1917 but became unusable due to the Russian Revolution and the ensuing civil war .

The reconstruction of the bridge began in autumn 1928 and was completed on November 9, 1929 under the direction of the organization “Wijsskproekt 401” (Ukrainian: Військпроект 401 ) and the chief architect W. Kochan (Ukrainian: В. Кохан ).

In connection with the renaming of Stadtrajon Podil on the 50th birthday of the chairman of the Central Executive Committee of Ukraine Grigory Petrovsky , the bridge was named Petrivskyi Bridge . During the withdrawal of the Red Army from Kiev in September 1941, the bridge was destroyed, then repaired by the Germans, later blown up by them during the Battle of the Dnepr in autumn 1943 and after the liberation of the city it was opened from July 1944 to November 1945 rebuilt.
