Mavromichalis is the name of a famous family of maniots .

Name bearer

  • Georgios Mavromichalis was one of the leaders of the Maniots uprising in 1770 (part of the Orlov revolt ), grandfather of the following.
  • Petros Mavromichalis, usually called "Petrobey", b. 1775, received the Beylik Maina (=  Mani ) in 1816 , joined the Filiki Eteria and in April 1821 proclaimed the uprising in the Peloponnese . In 1821 he became a member of the Peloponnesian Senate , in 1823 president at the Congress of Astros and chief of executive power. Since he opposed Theodoros Kolokotronis and Ioannis Kapodistrias because of their dependence on Russian influences, Kapodistrias had him arrested in Nafplio in February 1831 and thrown into dungeon. For this Kapodistrias became of Petros' son
  • Georgios Mavromichalis, who had distinguished himself very much in the relief of Messolongi in 1822 , and his brother
  • Konstantinos Mavromichalis, who had been an interpreter at the Sublime Porte until 1817 and who had also distinguished himself in the struggle for freedom, was murdered on October 9, 1831. Immediately after the act, Konstantinos was killed by Kapodistrias' entourage, and Georgios was shot dead on October 22nd. Petros Mavromichalis was set free by the new cabinet and in 1836 was appointed one of the vice-presidents of the State Council by Otto I , whose most loyal supporter he then proved. He died on January 29, 1848.
  • Ilias Mavromichalis, called "Katzakos", was a nephew of "Petrobey" and accompanied the Greek King Otto I on a trip to his native Bavaria. Ilias died of cholera in Munich in 1836 .
