Michael von Jung

Michael von Jung (born September 29, 1781 in Saulgau , † July 24, 1858 in Tettnang ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and poet of grave songs, which he read to the lute and later published in book form. His songs are characterized by a carefree, drastic depiction of illnesses, accidents and types of death, on the other hand by the pastoral care for the salvation of the dead and the living in the spirit of the Enlightenment. This contrast results in a height of fall that made Jung known above all as a master of involuntary comedy.

Life

Title page from Melpomene , 1839

After studying theology at the University of Salzburg and attending the seminary in Meersburg , Jung was ordained a priest in 1806. This was followed by a four-and-a-half year vicariate in Erolzheim . Finally, in 1811, he was appointed pastor in the Upper Swabian Kirchdorf an der Iller .

For his services in nursing the sick during a typhus epidemic in 1814, Jung was made a knight of the Royal Württemberg Order of Civil Merit. The knight title, which Jung proudly wore from now on, was linked to personal nobility.

His songs, which he liked to accompany with the lute , brought him into conflict with the church authorities on several occasions. In 1820 he had to pay a fine for "unauthorized and unworthy writing". Although he was denied the ecclesiastical imprimatur in 1837, he self-published 200 of his songs in two volumes in 1839. The title "Melpomene or Grablieder" refers to Melpomene , the muse of tragic poetry and funeral song.

In 1849 he was transferred to Tettnang . While the literature mostly speaks of a punitive transfer, von Jung himself saw the process as “a most gracious award of a post appropriate to his frail age”. There he worked as a chaplain and died in 1858.

reception

Jung received new attention in the 20th century, and his songs appeared in selected editions that emphasized the comic elements in his work. In the play Do not sing, bird of Alfred Weitenauer visited a canon Stolzenberg the Kirchdorferfeld pastor to him - of course without success - to dissuade from his unworthy action. The play was filmed in 1966 by the SDR with the Swabian folk actor Willy Reichert in the lead role under the title The bird does not let singing . Dieter Borsche played the visitor .
