history

The heads of the TMORO in Eastern Thrace

In the course of the Ilinden-Preobraschenie uprising , which was prepared by the Secret Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization (TMORO) against the Ottoman Empire , a congress of the delegates of the "7th Revolutionary Region" took place here between July 11th and 13th, 1903 . 300 fighters and members of the organization took part in the congress. The aim of the uprising was to liberate Bulgarian areas as much as possible in order to unite them with the Principality of Bulgaria at a later date, with the consent of the great powers, and to help the rebels in Western Thrace and Macedonia.

On August 5th, Jul. / August 18, 1903 greg. On the day of the transfiguration of the Lord (Bulgarian: Preobraschenie day, which was named after the Ilinden-Preobraschenie uprising with the Elias day), the start of the uprising in eastern Thrace in Vilayet Edirne was given in the area with the proclamation of the Strandscha republic . The Strandscha Republic organized the entire public and economic life of the region for the next 26 days. The republic elected Mikhail Gerdschikow , Stamat Ikonomow , and Lasar Madscharow at its head. The insurgents were poorly armed and outnumbered, which led to their defeat.

In the final days of the uprising, the Turkish regular army attacked more than 3,000 children, women and the elderly - all of them Bulgarian refugees - in the Petrowa Niwa area. The massacre is still denied by Turkey today.

Today the main annual commemoration ceremony for the anniversary of the Ilinden Probraschenie uprising takes place here. During the festivities, which last several days, many traditional folk singers and dancers from the Strandschar region and Thrace perform in their typical costumes .

Plaque on the monument

At the end of the 1950s, a memorial and a museum were erected here. In 2003, on the 100th anniversary of the uprising, the "Sweta Petka" church was consecrated. The museum is open all year round and has a rich exhibition, some with original documents, pictures and weapons related to the preparation, implementation and suppression of the uprising in Thrace and Macedonia.
