Petruskirche

The Petruskirche is a Protestant church in the city of Dessau-Roßlau in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The church was built in 1902/1903 according to plans by Gustav Teichmüller in the north of Dessau . At this time, a new, large residential area was being built north of Dessau's old town, for which the Johanniskirche , which had been responsible up until then, appeared to be too small. A first letter from the parish church council with the request for a division of the parish of the Johanniskirche dates back to December 1897. A similar but somewhat smaller church with the Christ Church was also built by Teichmüller in nearby Ziebigk .

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 10, 1901. During the construction work, around a dozen human skeletons were found. On the basis of a coin found at the same time, a Anhalt threesome, it was assumed that the burial was in the time of the Wars of Liberation in 1813/14. The corpses were later buried again in the middle of the Petruskirche.

The tower of the church received a concrete slab for its foundation, which was set from June 18 to 27, 1901. The masonry work began on June 27, 1901. The foundation stone was laid on September 18, 1901 in heavy rain. After the construction work was suspended between December 16 and March 3, 1902, on April 8, 1902, due to the winter weather the cross there will be placed on the west gable. A short time later the tower was also completed.

The completed church was handed over on June 7, 1903.

architecture

The Petruskirche was built in the neo-Romanesque style. The tower to the northwest of the nave to the main street is striking. The tower, built on a square floor plan, is 52.5 meters high. A roof turret sits enthroned over the crossing . The eastern end of the nave is polygonal .

Interior design

The interior of the church is kept simple. In the nave there is a gallery occupying three sides. The organ is located on the west side . The northern extension originally served as a royal box .
