origin of the name

Until the late 18th century, the area was known as An Tearmann , which means a place of refuge . The Irish Paiteagó and from it the English Pettigo arose from the Latin translation protectio .

population

At the 2016 Irish census, the parish was divided into three districts: Pettigo (390), Grousehall (75) and Templecarn (123). The resulting population of 588 together results in 12 residents less than in the 2011 census. The 2011 Northern Irish census showed 63 inhabitants for Tullyhommon.

tourism

The area around Pettigo with the mountains and lakes is well suited for hiking, horse riding and fishing. Mainly, however, Pettigo is known as the starting point for the pilgrimage site Station Island on the nearby Lough Derg .

Transport links

train

In 1866 Pettigo was connected to the rail network. This made it possible to reach Ballyshannon , Enniskillen and Dublin Amiens Street , among others . With the division of Ireland in 1922 and increasing road traffic, the railway was used less and less. In 1957 the route was closed.

bus

Apart from a connection to Lough Derg on weekends in the summer months (Route 486), Bus Éireann does not stop at Pettigo. With the Ulsterbus line 194 from / to Enniskillen, the place is connected to the bus network.
