Peyre-Brune

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peyre-Brune (also known as Pierre-Brune or Dolmen von Bel (l) et ) is a dolmen from the Neolithic near Saint-Aquilin in the French Dordogne department . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

location

The dolmen Peyre-Brune ( in German brown stone , derived from the Occitan word Peyre with the meaning stone and the French adjective brune with the meaning brown ). It is located in the immediate vicinity of a forest path leading to Segonzac , about 1.5 kilometers west of the hamlet of Seyssac , part of the municipality of Saint-Aquilin. It is located in the middle of the forest on a ridge around 200 meters above sea level.

Orientation and structure

Dolmen Peyrebrune near Saint-Aquilin

The dolmen, about 2.75 m long and 2.0 m wide, consists of a rectangular chamber and is oriented with its longitudinal axis towards the southeast. The dolmen is underlain by Upper Ocene sands. It consists of seven, about 65 cm wide and 80 cm supporting stones, the large cover plate is tilted to the southeast. The blocks are all made of very hard, silicified , ferrous rock of an orange-brown color. This rock belongs to the so-called Sidérolithique , an Eocene formation of the Aquitaine Basin , which is only found erratically on the underlying Campanium . After the campanium was deposited, the sedimentary basin silted up and karstified . Continental sediments of the cuisium filled depressions in the karst surface and were diagenetically recrystallized and silicified - the result was a raw material valued because it is extremely hard and resistant for the megalithm builders.

Finds

Excavations by the Societé archéologique du Périgord in 1874 revealed the following:

Fragments of stone, vegetable ashes and charcoal made from oak were also found . The grave goods can now be viewed in the Musée du Périgord in Périgueux .

Based on the clay and stone fragments, the discovered inventory could be assigned to the Artenac culture .

According to the analyzes, the buried person was not cremated.

legend

According to a local legend, the tribal chief who was married to a fairy fell in battle. The fairy then ordered her servants to build the dolmen at the place of death. She also placed a curse on him for those who should dare to assault their spouse's tomb.

conservation

The fairy's curse obviously doesn't seem to have worked, as the dolmen is now in a poor state of preservation. It is also heavily overgrown by chestnuts .

meaning

Peyre-Brune is one of the very rare megalithic sites in this region with finds that allow an assignment to a certain culture.
