Pastor's Book

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A pastor's book (also pastors 'book , pastors' directory or presbyterology ) is a personal history reference work and lists the clergy in a certain territory.

Story and content

After the new genre of scholarly lexicon had developed at the end of the 17th century , the first parish books were published in the 18th century. They not only biographically deserve representatives of the class, but also all office holders and can also contain detailed information on their family environment. With this long lead time - and also because of their importance for cultural history - pastors became the professional group that is best researched today in terms of personal history.

Pastors' books are usually arranged alphabetically according to personal names or according to the structures of the territorial church administration (superintendentures, provosts, pastorships ( parishes )) and within the pastorships chronologically ( series pastorum ) and indexed . Such reference works are now available for most of the regional churches . In the appendix (scope and depth of detail of the individual biographies of the officials, references to literature, mention of relatives of the pastors, etc.) they differ greatly.

Pastors' books practically only exist for Protestant churches, but occasionally they also list pre-Reformation clergy.
