Herwarth von Schade

Herwarth Freiherr von Schade (born December 13, 1926 in Breslau ; † November 21, 2009 in Hamburg ) was a German theologian and church library director .

Live and act

After his birth, Herwarth von Schade lived in Ratibor from 1927 to 1939 , where he attended the Protestant elementary school and the Dietrich-Eckart-Gymnasium. In 1939 he moved to Hamburg, where he attended the Johanneum School of Academics . Johannes Reinhard confirmed von Schade in 1942 in Harvestehude . During the Second World War , von Schade served as an air force helper from 1943 and as a soldier in Silesia in 1944/45 . From 1945 to 1947 he was in French captivity. During this time he turned to theology and studied in the prison camp in Montpellier for two semesters at the École de Théologie Protestante . He then continued his studies at the University of Tübingen and the Church University in Hamburg .

In 1951 and 1953 von Schade took the theological exams in Hamburg and was ordained by Simon Schöffel on February 14, 1954 . He then worked as an assistant pastor in Groß Borstel , Klein Borstel and Horn . From 1955 to 1962 he worked as a pastor in Barmbek-Nord , then as a church councilor in the regional church office and from 1967 as a senior church councilor . He also preached regularly in the Maria Magdalenen Church in Klein Borstel. With the establishment of the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church , von Schade ended his activities in church administration.

From 1977 to 1979 he went through training for the higher service at academic libraries, which he completed with the corresponding state examination. From 1980 until his retirement at the end of 1988, von Schade was director of the North Elbe Church Library . During this time he drafted the standard list for the keyword catalog and initiated the conversion of the journal and article documentation to electronic data processing. In 1982/83 he took over the chairmanship of the Hamburg regional association of the German Library Association and co-founded the magazine "Informations".

Von Schade devoted himself in particular to church music and liturgy . From 1962 to 1978 he was a member of the Office for Church Music and took part in the Lutheran Liturgical Conference . At times he took over the chairmanship of the liturgical committee of the VELKD and from 1982 to 1988 he was chairman of the hymn book committee of the North Elbe Evangelical Lutheran Church. From 1962 to 1989 he taught church music at the University of Music and Theater in Hamburg , from 1988 onwards with the title of professor. From 1989 to 1992 he taught Protestant theology at the University of Hamburg , where he received his doctorate in 1996 with a work on the history of the hymn book in Hamburg.

Works

Herwarth von Schade published numerous, often bibliographical and biographical writings on Hamburg's church history. He was co-editor of the “Works on the Church History of Hamburg” and created, initially in collaboration with Friedrich Hammer , a directory of Hamburg pastors since the Reformation.
