The Roman Catholic parish church of Bischofstetten is elevated in the northeast of the town of Bischofstetten in the market town of Bischofstetten in the Melk district in Lower Austria . The church consecrated to St. Agatha belongs to the dean's office in Melk in the diocese of St. Pölten . The parish church is a listed building .

history

The church is a foundation of the Regensburg bishops in the 9th century and was in the 11th / 12th. Century a branch of Hürm. The churchyard is closed off in the south by a lining wall. This points to an early medieval castle church. A parish is mentioned in 1160 and a pastor in 1325. In the 17th / 18th In the 19th century the church was again a branch. In 1761 a parish was established again. Today's church was built in 1743/1746 using old masonry, presumably with Josef Wissgrill , and consecrated in 1746.

Church exterior

The nave is simple and unstructured with a surrounding eaves cornice under a gable roof. On the south side, a heavily damaged, Gothic garment of a pointed arch portal was exposed. The tower, half set in the west between the volute flanks, has a small double-onion helmet.

Church interior

A square choir adjoins the two-bay nave with a narrower western gallery bay, both under deep vaults on pilasters and entablature. The pre-rounded gallery parapet shows acanthus leaf stucco.

Furnishing

The church has a rich baroque interior from the 18th century.

The organ was built by Herbert Gollini (1980). Johann Gottlieb Jenichen (1823) cast a bell.
