The Roman Catholic parish church Doren is north of the main road on a mountain slope in the Bregenzerwälder community Doren in the district of Bregenz in Vorarlberg . The church is consecrated to St. John Nepomuk and belongs to the deanery of Vorderwald-Kleinwalsertal in the diocese of Feldkirch . The church is a listed building .

history

From 1497 the area of the municipality of Doren belonged to the municipality of Sulzberg . In 1823 today's church was built according to plans by the Bregenz district building authority. Presumably there was no previous building, the consecration took place in 1826 and in 1853 it was elevated to a parish church. The interior was restored in 1949.

Church building

Exterior

The uniform church building dates entirely from the years 1823 to 1826. The building is a simple village church with a single-nave and spacious nave and a somewhat recessed choir consisting of a front yoke and a semicircular apse. At the east end of the choir is a square choir tower with an onion dome, which merges into an octagon at the top . South of the tower is a two-storey sacristy. The west facade with triangular gable was accentuated by the ashlar , a row of arches , profiled frames and a porch.

Interior

The interior is not really structured architecturally. The simple organ gallery rests on Tuscan columns. Hans Sontheimer painted the ceiling pictures in the nave in 1949. The pictures show “Maria with the child over Doren with St. Gebhard , Johann Nepomuk and St. Catherine ” and the “Teaching Christ with St. Francis and St. Niklaus von Flüe ”. The ceiling painting in the choir is unsigned and dates from the late 19th century and depicts the Most Holy Trinity . The stained glass was made around 1900. In the choir they are figural and represent the " Immaculate Heart of Mary ", the " Annunciation of the Lord " and the " Sacred Heart of Jesus ”. The stained glass in the nave is ornamental.

Furnishing

The high altar from 1877 to 1881 was made by the sculptor Anton Rüscher according to a design by Joseph Anton Müller . The neo-Romanesque ciborium stands on columns and consists of a gilded and colored dome with a relief of St. John Nepomuk in the gable. On the dome tabernacle there is a statue of the Heart of Jesus and angel figures kneel on the predella . On the front of the cafeteria , sacrificial scenes from the Old and New Testament are shown in relief. In the middle the heart of Jesus is depicted with a crown of thorns.

The statue to the left of the triumphal arch represents Mary as Immaculata , the figure opposite St. Joseph with child and angels. The pulpit was built in 1883 based on a design by Josef Anton Müller and, like the high altar, was made by Anton Rüscher. There are reliefs of the evangelists on the parapet.

The baptismal font with plait decoration and a figure of St. John the Baptist was created around 1830. On the south wall of the church there is a crucifixion group with assistance figures from around 1830. In the choir and nave there are portraits of the twelve apostles from the late 19th century. A richly designed chandelier from the second quarter of the 19th century hangs on the ceiling of the nave. There is also an Immaculata in the processional carrying case from the late 19th century. The confessionals were decorated with baroque style elements and plaited ornamentation. On the right there is a figure of St. John Nepomuk.
