history

Parish Church of St. Peter in der Gaal - panoramio.jpg

The parish of St. Peter probably had the bishop of Salzburg or perhaps the Seckauer Stiftspropst built around 1200. This is supported by the parish's Romanesque origins. The old building stock in the church suggests that a choir tower church stood here. A type of church that was common in the region around 1200. This type of church was evidently widespread in the churches belonging to Salzburg. Examples in the immediate vicinity are the churches in Kobenz and Fohnsdorf . The first mention was made in 1317, in a document in which the exchange of a field between Konrad Perper and Dietmar from the Gaal was sealed. Gunther der Kreul, pastor from the Gaal, appeared among the witnesses.

architecture

The three-bay long house has a needle cap barrel on straps on sturdy stepped wall pillars. The triaxial west gallery on pillars is vaulted under the groin. The choir square tower is Romanesque. The narrower square tower is vaulted and opened with a round arch with a floor raised over three steps. The tower above is low and stocky and has a tent roof. The somewhat wider one-bay choir is vaulted with groin and closes with a semicircular apse. The modern front arch painting was created by A. Amesbauer. The west facade has a two-course covered baroque staircase. On the tower yoke sides are baroque exterior frescoes from the third quarter of the 18th century, south Christ on the Mount of Olives, north Christ on the cross. The frescoes date from 1757 and the stained glass windows were not used until after World War II in March 1951. After the fire in 1820, the church was expanded to include baroque exterior frescoes and a staircase. The Romanesque tower and the Romanesque choir have been preserved. The baroque nave is from the 18th century.

Furnishing

The high altar was built after the middle of the 19th century and shows the altarpiece Petri handing over the keys, painted by Josef Veiter from Leoben (1878) and bears the statues Peter and Paul from the second half of the 17th century. The free-standing tabernacle is from the end of the 18th century. The side altars from 1853, on the left with the picture Anna Maria reading teaching by Johann Eisenschmidt (1854), on the right with the picture St. Georg (1854). The pulpit is from the second half of the 19th century. The oval font is baroque. A coat of arms tombstone names Gabelkhoven and 1609.
