The parish church of Gries am Brenner is in the center of the village of Gries am Brenner in the Innsbruck-Land district in the state of Tyrol . The the feast of the Visitation ordained Roman Catholic parish church belongs to the deanery Matrei am Brenner in the Diocese of Innsbruck . The church and the former cemetery are under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

A chapel was mentioned in a document in 1534. The church, built in 1634, was enlarged from 1676 to 1678. From 1823 to 1826 a new building was built according to plans by Jakob Prantl and Johann Muigg, and the church was consecrated in 1831. The church was restored, outside in 1926, inside in 1971, and inside in 1930/1931.

The parish was founded in 1941.

architecture

The late classicist church building was built over the baroque floor plan of a previous church.

The nave stands under a half-hip roof, the southern lower choir has a polygonal end with a subsequent sacristy, the facades are structured with an architectural plaster. The mighty tower stands on the east side of the slope by the choir, it has a bell storey set off by a cornice with round-arched sound windows, above an octagon with an onion roof and an onion-crowned lantern. The north-facing main front is two-storey, triaxial with a small vestibule and above it a quadruple window and a round window in the gable.

The interior of the church is shown in the nave with a flat dome over wall pillars with composite capitals. The organ gallery is vaulted with a needle cap barrel. The triumphal arch is rounded. The choir closes with a semi-dome. The nave has three arched windows lengthways with an oculus above the middle one, the choir has two arched windows on the street side and one arched window on the slope side.

The classicistic stucco and the apostles were created by Josef Kinast in 1827. Josef Arnold the Elder painted the ceiling frescoes , the choir dome Nativity 1827, in the pendentifs grisaille medallions with the four prophets, in the main dome representation in the temple 1828, in the pendentifs grisaille medallions Adoration of the Kings , Jesus teaches the four evangelists in the temple, preaching in the yoke , and crucifixion in the nave to the south in 1827/1828.

Furnishing

The classicistic high altar from 1826/1828 was created by Josef Reinisch, the high altar sheet of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was painted by Josef Arnold around 1827/1828, the statues Peter and Paul above the offering portals and the angels and putti were created by Gottlieb Klotz the Elder. The side altars show the Holy Family with Elisabeth and John, and Joseph of Nazareth .

Under the gallery on the left there is a war memorial with a crucifix and commemorative plaques on the side by Hans Buchgschwendter in 1927. There are two wooden plaques with the fourteen helpers from the 17th century from the Chapel of the Chapel, which was demolished in 1955.

The organ case with a parapet positive was created by Josef Reinisch from 1833 to 1837 with a statue of King David by Nikolaus Seelos at the same time . The organ was created by Franz Reinisch II in 1906.
