Hans Buchgschwenter

Hans Buchgschwenter (also Buchgschwendter ; born March 23, 1898 in Matrei am Brenner ; † January 3, 1985 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian sculptor and painter .

Life

Hans Buchgschwenter was born in 1898 as the second youngest child of master carpenter Peter Buchgschwenter and Maria geb. Auer was born in Matrei. After the death of both parents in 1905, he came to meet friends in Hall in Tirol , where, after attending elementary school, he did a four-year apprenticeship with Josef Bachlechner the elder . He then attended the arts and crafts school in Innsbruck with Ferdinand Stabinger and Viktor Höfer, interrupted by military service in 1917/1918. From 1925 to 1928 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Josef Müllner . From 1929 he lived and worked as a freelance artist in Matrei am Brenner. He married Anna Winkler, the couple had two daughters.

Buchgschwenter mainly created large sacred sculptures and nativity scenes for church and private clients, preferably in wood, but also in stone, artificial stone , plaster and bronze. His main work is the furnishing of the Pradl parish church between 1937 and 1981. For work on this and other Innsbruck churches, he set up a studio in Pradl in the post-war period. In addition to sculptures, Buchgschwenter also created wall paintings, sgraffiti and woodcuts .
