Josef Bachlechner the Elder

Josef Bachlechner the Elder (born October 28, 1871 in Bruneck , † October 17, 1923 in Hall in Tirol ) was an Austrian sculptor .

Josef Bachlechner was born as the son of a master tanner in Bruneck. After training as a carver in Val Gardena and attending the wood carving school in Bozen with Franz Haider , Bachlechner worked for the cabinet maker and altar maker Barth in Brixen and from 1888 for the sculptor Josef Diechtl (1852–1934) in Hall in Tyrol. He then studied in Rome and from 1896 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Syrius Eberle .

Around 1910 he settled permanently in Hall, where he ran a large workshop with numerous employees and students. Peter Sellemond was one of his students . Bachlechner was friends with Sebastian Rieger , known as Reimmichl , who worked in Heiligkreuz near Hall . In 1916 he married Klara Dobin, the couple had three sons and two daughters. One of the sons, Josef Bachlechner the Younger , also became a well-known sculptor.

Bachlechner mainly created religious works in the neo-Gothic style, whereby he was influenced by the Beuron art school and based in particular on the carving style of Michael Pacher . He was best known for his nativity scenes .

Honors

In 1923, Bachlechner received from Pope Pius XI. awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Gregorius . In Bruneck, Hall and in the Innsbruck district of Höttinger Au streets were named after him. A primary school in his native Bruneck also bears his name.
