The Roman Catholic parish church of Helpfau is located in Helpfau in the municipality of Helpfau-Uttendorf in the Braunau am Inn district in Upper Austria . The church, consecrated to St. Stephen , belongs to the Mattighofen deanery in the Diocese of Linz . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection .
history
A church was mentioned in a document in 1224. The Gothic church was demolished and the core of the converted tower has been preserved. From 1724 to 1735 the church was rebuilt with the Burghausen court mason Johann Baptist Canta. A fire in 1775 destroyed the church's furnishings. From 1776 to 1781 the church building was restored with the Burghausen master builder Franz Anton Glonner.
architecture
The single-nave four-bay nave has pillars with coupled pilasters with late Rococo stucco capitals, basket arch belts and Bohemian caps in between. The west gallery is triaxial. The triumphal arch with a stucco curtain shows the year 1799. The retracted choir with a straight end has stucco ceiling probably from the first building in 1735. The choir and the nave show frescoes with depictions of the legend of Stephen. The stoning of Stephen in the choir, painted by Johann Nepomuk della Croce , was spoiled during a restoration in 1891 and restored to its original state in 1955. The tower in the southern choir corner has an onion helmet. The marble sacristy portal shows the year 1712.

The high altar from 1839 shows an altar sheet by Johann Nepomuk della Croce (1779).
