The Roman Catholic parish church of Saints Peter and Paul is a church in the village of Vomp in the Schwaz district in Tyrol . The church is dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul . It is a listed building .

History and architecture

The current two-aisled building goes back to a smaller previous building, which is dated to the 8th century, as an archaeological study in 1983 showed. The property was first mentioned in a document in 1141 as belonging to the Benedictine monastery of St. Georgenberg . After a new building in 1323, it is called with the patronage "Maria and Peter".

The current basic form of the parish church was created between 1460 and 1480 by the foreman Gilg Mitterhofer from Schwaz. In 1480 the new Gothic building of the tower and the church was completed. After a village fire in 1516, the aisle and the sacristy were added between 1520 and 1522.

During the Fifth Coalition War among the Bavarian soldiers of General Carl Philipp von Wrede in 1809, the church burned down on the foundation walls, the entire facility was destroyed. By 1820 the church was  rebuilt in the classical style with financial support from the emperor . A new copper helmet was put on in the late 19th century . The west portal is early Baroque , the other portals on the north and south sides still have a late Gothic pointed arch shape .

The church is surrounded on all sides by a cemetery with a separate chapel for the dead (southeast).

Vomp is one of the oldest old parishes in Tyrol.

Church interior

The main nave has three bays. There is a round arch (triumphal gate) and a two-bay choir with a special vault, a so-called stab cap barrel and a 5/8 end . The main and side aisles are separated by heavy pillars. The frescoes with scenes from the life of the church patrons Peter and Paul as well as depictions of saints were painted by Josef Arnold the Elder around 1820 . The frescoes on the choir wall with the depictions of Christ Appearing to Peter and the Crucifixion of Peter were created by Emanuel Walch in 1893 and later painted over.

The church has had its full current appearance since the complete renovation in 1983–1985. Both the popular altar and the baptismal font from the 17th century were renovated. The new organ was inaugurated on December 8, 1992. A new shingle roof was covered in 1996.
