history

In 1216 the Jochberg appears for the first time in documents. Archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg then drew the southern border of his house diocese Chiemsee in “summitatem montis Jochberg” (= over the mountain top of the Jochberg).

In 1485, a second church was built on Jochberg next to the existing Michaelskirche. St. Wolfgang von Regensburg , patron saint of miners, was elected. So two churches stood side by side for over 200 years.

The oldest part of the simple, single-nave church is located in a room at the foot of the tower, it is provided with a Gothic rib vault. Otherwise nothing remains of the original building, which was consecrated on June 15, 1485 by the Chiemsee bishop Georg II. Altdorfer .

The actual cult image of the church and destination of the pilgrims was a statue of Wolfgang. The original (around 1520) is said to come from the workshop of a "Master of Kundl". Grateful believers donated votive offerings made of pure beeswax to the saint , which were bought back by a wax puller at the end of the year. The frescoes in the church were created by the Kitzbühel painter Simon Benedikt Faistenberger (1695–1759). There is still a so-called “Miracle Book” in which “99 miraculous works” are listed. The first entry dates from 1505.

Below the church a spring rose from which people drank and bathed, and from which pilgrims hoped for help and healing. From 1505 to 1785 there was evidence of a very active use of bathing. Why the stream of pilgrims dried up is not known.

The association “Friends of the Wolfgang Spring” tries to drill a deep hole in the hope of getting the spring back to bubbling with the Wolfgang water.
