Parish Church of St. Veit in Krems

The parish church of St. Veit in the city of Krems an der Donau is a Roman Catholic church . It is also called "Cathedral of the Wachau".

Parish and building history

It goes to a gift from Emperor Heinrich II . from 1014 and initially had a considerable expansion as the so-called "mother parish". It was not until 1178 that Sankt Veit (Vitus) was named as the church's patron saint , which led to the hypothesis that the oldest parish church was to be found on the site of today's Piarist Church in Krems (Frauenberg Church ) and that it was consecrated to St. Stephan.

Only the lower part of the tower, which dates back to the early 13th century, remains of the medieval church building. Due to the poor state of construction, it was completely demolished and a new building (1616–1630) according to the plans of Cypriano Biasino from Milan .

On the outside, the church presents itself as a strict, early Baroque building, the interior furnishings come from the 18th century. The work of the Passau sculptor and architect Joseph Matthias Götz (high altar, choir stalls, pulpit) from 1733 and the design of the church with ceiling frescoes were essential . They come from Martin Johann Schmidt ("Kremser Schmidt") and were created in 1787, the high altar picture was created in 1734 by Johann Georg Schmidt ("Wiener Schmidt"), an older contemporary with no family relationship.

The black marble side altar in the left transept was originally located in the “Bründl Chapel” of the Capuchin Monastery and, which was transferred here in 1796 when the monastery was dissolved. The small statue of the Virgin Mary (Bohemian, around 1420) was also displayed in it, which, as the image of grace “Maria Bründl”, formed the center of the devotion to Mary in the monastery and .

On the northeast side of the church there is a small chapel, which was created in 1739 to teach the group of figures Anna Maria reading . It is a stone sculpture from the first half of the 14th century, which, as a document of the late Gothic period, has a particularly high value in the development of art in Krems.

The church was renovated from 2009 to 2016 at a cost of 3.925 million euros.
