Parish Church St. Barbara (Wellendorf)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parish church of St. Barbara is the Catholic village church of Wellendorf (Lower Saxony). It was built between 1923 and 1924 under the direction of the architect C. Kriege in the neo-Romanesque style. The foundation stone was laid in 1922. It consists of a single nave long house made of local sandstone, which gives the steep gable roofs over the main nave, transept and western entrance building a striking appearance. The tower in the southeast was not completed until 1949. In it hang three bronze bells (g ', b', c '), whereby the third - cast in 1735 - was taken over from the church in neighboring Borgloh .

The patronage of St. Barbara of Nicomedia , the patron saint of miners, is explained by the history of the place: from the 16th century to 1963, hard coal was mined in Wellendorf and the surrounding area .

history

Wellendorf's entry into the church is first mentioned in 1287 as "Wendelinctorpe" in the parish of Borgloh. From July 1, 1924, the church was the curate . On November 1, 1961, it was raised to an independent parish. A baptismal and marriage book has been kept by the community since 1924, the death and company book since 1925.
