The Roman Catholic parish church Werfen is in the market town of Werfen in the district of St. Johann im Pongau in the province of Salzburg . The parish church of St. James the Elder belongs to the Altenmarkt dean's office in the Archdiocese of Salzburg . The church is a listed building .

history

A church built in 1282 was destroyed in the local fire (1309). The second church building from 1404 and 1516 - with the exception of the tower - was demolished. The third church building was destroyed by fire in 1589. From 1652 to 1657, today's church was built according to the plans of the Salzburg court architect Johann Baptist von Driesche. In 1776 the tower was raised. In 1854 the church was elevated to a parish church. Restorations were in 1937, 1975 (exterior), 1977.

The church is elevated on the western slope in the middle of the market. The simple hall building has a free-standing tower on the northeast corner.

Furnishing

Main altar

The baroque columned altar from 1622 with a free-standing canteen. The baroque tabernacle with angels on the side was transferred here from St. Michael / Lg and erected in 1953. The high altar shows the altarpiece Coronation of Mary and the upper image James the Elder (1622) and bears baroque console figures Rupert and Virgil and in the essay Michael and Raphael with Tobias (around 1760).

The organ was built by Ludwig Mooser (1853).
