The Horse Railway Museum ( Muzeum koněspřežky ) at Mánesova 10 in České Budějovice is a branch of the South Bohemian Museums and is reminiscent of the Budweis – Linz – Gmunden horse-drawn railway , which was in operation from 1827 to 1872 until it was replaced by steam-powered trains. The former station keeper's house is a protected cultural monument.

history

The salt trade between Upper Austria and Bohemia on the so-called Linzer Steig , which has been documented for over a thousand years, became cheaper and faster thanks to the use of the horse-drawn railway. On September 7, 1827, the 50 km long section from Budweis to Zartlesdorf (Rybník) in the municipality of Dolní Dvořiště was opened. Along the 128 km long route from Budweis to Linz-Urfahr , north of the Danube , there were a total of 52 little houses for the railway attendants, who were at the lowest level in the hierarchy of the railway company, at a distance of around two and a half kilometers.

The keeper's houses were preferably located near switches, railroad-road junctions, bridges and train stations. They had an anteroom, a smoking room and either one or two rooms. The living space was accordingly between 30 and 50 square meters.

The railway keeper's house No. 1 in Budweis was built in 1828 and was previously part of the freight station. From there the route led on a 400-meter-long dam through the now drained Krumlov pond and on over the railway bridge to the salt stores in České ulice (Bohemian Lane) in the center of Budweis and to the ticket offices on the corner of Piaristická ulice (Piarist Street ) . In 1977, the caretaker's house No. 1 was moved 10 meters to the south as the road was widened.

building

The Horse Railway Museum is located in the first railway keeper's house outside the center of Ceske Budejovice. It is located opposite the buildings of the Koh-i-Noor Hardtmuth company on the southern main bypass around Budweis.

The single-storey house with a tiled, crooked hip roof has largely been preserved in its original state. It has two living rooms and thus belongs to the larger version of the keeper's houses.

exhibition

On the one hand, the permanent exhibition conveys the history and present of the railway keeper's houses and, on the other, brings the difficult life of the railway keepers closer. There are display boards, models, devices, furniture and an interactive digital station in the rooms.

The museum has been open to the public in the summer months since 2014.
