The horse market is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approximately 130 meter long horse market is located in the south-western part of the old town island in the Marien Quartier . It begins on the Klingenberg at the confluence of the Marlesgrube in this square, runs south towards the cathedral and ends at the intersection with Dankwartsgrube and Kapitelstrasse , where the horse market extends into its extension, the parade .

history

The horse market was originally considered part of the sand road , which it forms an extension on the other side of the Klingenberg. When it was first mentioned in a document in 1309, the Latin name was Platea Arenae , sand road. In 1365 the Low German form Sandstrate is documented, which is also used again in 1455 and 1456. The name Horse Market , derived from the horse sales held here, was first found in 1429. The High German version Horse Market can be traced for the first time on a city map from 1787 and was officially established in 1852.

In the Middle Ages and early modern times , the horse market was primarily a street for painters , goldsmiths , glaziers and carvers . However, there were also canons - curiae that fell to the city in 1804 in the course of secularization . One of the curiae, horse market 10–16, was a large contiguous piece of land that, unlike the rest of the city, was only loosely built on. It was sold by the city in 1824 and divided into four parcels in 1872, on which Wilhelminian-style houses were built, which still shape the character of the southern horse market today. The northern part of the Klingenberg area was severely affected by the air raid in March 1942 and today mainly features buildings from the post-war period.
