The Care & Living Hamburg GmbH is a company for care and support in Hamburg.

It has been privately owned again since 2007. The company has 2,691 inpatient care places at 13 locations and currently employs 2,000 people.

history

Between 1619 and 1622 a workshop and penitentiary was built at today's Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz on the site of today's Thalia Theater . In 1726 the factory and penitentiary, also known as the “ poor house ”, housed 2500 residents, that is 3% of the Hamburg population at the time. In 1842 the poor house fell victim to the Great Hamburg Fire and was built near the present home. In 1902 the “Farmsen care home” was built, and in 1929 a house in Groß Borstel to meet the increased demand for supplies - especially due to the consequences of the war. In the 1960s, similar facilities followed in Lokstedt , Bergedorf and Wilhelmsburg . The Federal Social Welfare Act serves as the legal basis .

Companies

In addition to the care services, the Pflege & Wohnen Hamburg group also organizes cleaning services (APUW and PUW Service) and personnel services through subsidiaries themselves. The shareholders of “Pflege & Wohnen Hamburg” were 50% each of PUW Pflege und Wohnen Beteiligungs GmbH and Vitanas GmbH & Co. KGaA , based in Berlin .

The management was jointly carried out from September 2014 to the beginning of 2016 by Thomas Flotow and Torsten Wenzel. Thomas Flotow has been the sole managing director since January 1, 2016, supported by Nicol Wittkamp and Christian Kopka as authorized signatories. Thomas Wenzel was CEO of the Vitanas Group until he switched to the management of the Korian Group (February 2016). It had already acquired its stake in Pflege und Wohnen Hamburg together with the Andreas Franke group of companies in January 2007 for 65 million euros. According to the privatization agreement, the shares could not be sold for 10 years (i.e. until 2017).

In May 2017, a press release about ongoing sales explorations by the owners caused public criticism. The Hamburg Senator for Health Cornelia Prüfer-Storcks ( SPD ) stated: “Elderly and care facilities should not be objects of speculation”.

Shortly thereafter, the former shareholders of Pflegen & Wohnen Hamburg GmbH reached an agreement with the hedge fund Oaktree on the sale. In the course of 2018, Oaktree sold again Pflegen & Wohnen Hamburg GmbH with a minority stake to Deutsche Wohnen . Since January 1, 2019, Deutsche Wohnen, based in Berlin, has been the sole owner of Pflegen & Wohnen Hamburg GmbH, its subsidiaries and the real estate.

The subsidiaries include Pflege und Wohnen Service GmbH and Pflege und Wohnen Textil GmbH. As part of the restructuring of the temporary employment agency, the company's own subsidiary of personnel services was incorporated into Pflege und Wohnen Hamburg GmbH and is called Pflege & Wohnen Vario.
