The Phewa Lake ( Nepali फेवा ताल ) is a freshwater lake in the district of Kaski in Nepal . It is the second largest lake in the country.

The lake is located west of Pokhara in the valley of the Pardi Khola flowing through it - a right tributary of the Seti Gandaki - at an altitude of about 793 m . The height of the water level varies depending on the season between 793.7 and 795.7 m . Below the lake, the river has created an impressive gorge with the Devi's Falls in the limestone massif . Pokharas Airport is one kilometer east of the dam . North of the 8000 summit is the Annapurna - massif , the partially dewatered to the lake.

The lake has a length of 4.6 kilometers, a width of two kilometers and, depending on the water level, takes up an area of 4.4 to 5.2 km². Its depth is given with an average of eight meters and at the deepest point up to 19 meters. In the southeast is an island, the Tal Barahi Island ( Nepali तालबाराही ), which bears the Ajima temple , which is dedicated to the deity Shakti . The water temperature is 13.2 to 25.5 ° C, which means that the lake never freezes over.
The lake is of natural origin. Since 1967 the Pardi Dam was built, however, its water level has been regulated and the hydropower is used to generate electricity.
The lake is a popular recreational area for Pokhara and the temple island attracts many pilgrims.
