Career

Griggs reached the national finals of the school championship in 1932 with the Southampton school selection. In the aftermath, he was also a regular member of selection teams , mostly as a right - wing striker . In April 1936 he was the captain of a junior team from Southampton, the Hampshire FA he repeatedly represented between 1937 and 1939, including in games against Aldershot Command , selection teams of the Royal Air Force (November 1937 and December 1938), against the Royal Navy and against Dorset . For the amateur selection of the Football Association he was in December 1938 against the Royal Navy and in February 1939 against the Universities Athletic Union in action.

In June 1937 he came as an amateur to the second division Southampton FC and received a professional contract in April 1939. He made his debut in the Second Division under manager Tom Parker in May 1939, on the last day of the 1938/39 season , in a 2-0 away defeat by Plymouth Argyle . Griggs did not come to any further missions for Southampton, not even in the replacement competitions held after the Football League was discontinued due to the outbreak of World War II . Griggs lost a leg in the fighting, making it impossible to continue his football career.
