Philibert Babou

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philibert Babou (* around 1484; † September 1557 ), Seigneur de Givray et de La Bourdaisière etc., was Surintendant des Finances under King Francis I.

Life

Philibert Babou was the son of Laurent Babou († before 1504), Seigneur de Givray, and Françoise Rat († around 1543). On April 28, 1510 he married in Tours Marie Gaudin (* 1495, † 1580), daughter of living in Tours Victor Gaudin, Seigneur de Thuisseau et de Bourdaisière and financier of the French queen Anne de Bretagne († 1510) and Mayor from Tours, and Agnès Morin.

Marie Gaudin, who was considered the most beautiful woman of her time, became the “favorite” (in the sense of an unofficial mistress ) of Francis I (* 1494, King 1515–1547), who (much later) with her three daughters “the graces of King ”shared. The couple's wealth was soon based on this relationship and the resulting offices and benefits: In 1520, Marie Gaudin and Philibert Babou decided to rebuild the 14th century Château de La Bourdaisière . Philibert Babou became Mayor of Tours in 1521, Trésorier de France et de l'Épargne du Roi in 1523 , Surintendant des Finances in 1524 and Maître de l'Hôtel du Roi in 1544 and a member of the King's Conseil Privé . At the same time, the couple's property was expanded significantly beyond the property they inherited, including above all Montlouis-sur-Loire (1521) and Clos Lucé Castle , which Leonardo da Vinci lived in until his death in 1519 .

According to Michaud, Marie Gaudin and Philibert Babou had three daughters, also "of great beauty", who were used as models for the representation of the "three Marys" on an "Enterrement du Christ" to a tomb in the palace chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Bon- Désir of La Bourdaisière (most likely Philibert Babou's tomb), where Marie Gaudin depicted the Virgin Mary . The chapel was founded on April 15, 1544, Philibert Babou stated in his will on September 9, 1557, shortly before his death, that he wanted to be buried here, Marie Gaudin declared this in 1564. The family tombs were presented removed from the demolition of the chapel in 1780, the "Entombment" was then from 1863 in the church of Saint-Denis in Amboise .

Philibert Babou and Marie Gaudin had eight children:
