Marie Gaudin (also: Gordin, * around 1495; † 1580 ), Dame de La Bourdaisière (in Montlouis-sur-Loire ) et de Thuisseau, was a favorite of the French King Franz I.
Life
Marie Gaudin was the daughter of Victor Gaudin, who lived in Tours , Seigneur de Thuisseau et de La Bourdaisière and financier of the French Queen Anne de Bretagne († 1510) and Mayor of Tours, and Agnès Morin. She married on April 28, 1510 in Tours Philibert Babou (* around 1484, † 1557) Seigneur de Givray, royal notary in Bourges.
She was considered the most beautiful woman of her time, was the “favorite” (in the sense of an unofficial mistress ) of Franz I (* 1494, King 1515–1547), who (much later) shared “the graces of the king” with her three daughters . The couple's wealth was soon based on this relationship and the resulting offices and benefits: In 1520, Marie Gaudin and Philibert Babou decided to rebuild La Bourdaisière Castle, which dates back to the 14th century. Philibert Babou became Trésorier de France et de l'Épargne du Roi in 1523 , Surintendant des Finances in 1524 and Maître de l'Hôtel du Roi in 1544 and a member of the King's Conseil Privé .
Philibert Babou and Marie Gaudin also took part in Francis I's stay in Bologna in December 1515, during which he met Pope Leo X for negotiations. In those days the Pope gave her a precious diamond, which has been called Diamond Gaudin ever since .
Marie Gaudin later became the maid of honor of the French Queen Eleanor of Castile , the sister of Emperor Charles V , who had been married to Francis I since 1530 .
According to Michaud, Marie Gaudin and Philibert Babou had three daughters, also "of great beauty", who were used as models for the representation of the "three Marys" on an Enterrement du Christ to a tomb in the palace chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Désir La Bourdaisière served (most likely the tomb of Philibert Babous), where Marie Gaudin depicted the Virgin Mary . The chapel was founded on April 15, 1544, Philibert Babou stated in his will on September 9, 1557, shortly before his death, that he wanted to be buried here, Marie Gaudin declared this in 1564.
In the church of Saint-Denis in Amboise there is a reclining figure ( Gisant ), which is usually referred to as the "Statue of the drowned woman" ( "Statue de la femme noyée" ). As early as 1828 it was assumed that the figure came from the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Désir chapel, which was demolished in 1780, and that it was Marie Gaudin's grave slab. The Gisant had been relocated before the demolition, was in the Saint-Florentin church in Amboise at the beginning of the 19th century, was moved to Amboise Castle in 1864 and to the Saint-Hubert Castle Chapel in 1894. The figure has been considered a monument historique since 1904 - after having been considered "indecent" for a long time by the clergy and the faithful, as it is unclothed.
