Philibert II , called the beautiful or the good (born April 10, 1480 in Pont-d'Ain ; † September 10, 1504 ibid), was Duke of Savoy from 1497 to 1504 .

Life

He was the son of Philip the Landless (1436-1497) and his first wife Margaret of Bourbon . In 1496, Philibert's father unexpectedly became Duke of Savoy when his great-nephew Charles II died, leaving him as the next heir to the line.

In the same year, sixteen-year-old Philibert married his cousin, nine-year-old Yolanda Louise of Savoy. She was the daughter of Charles I of Savoy , called the Fighter , and the Blanca of Montferrat. Yolanda was in the direct line of succession from Charles VII. Although her father-in-law claimed this, she was actually entitled to the succession to the throne of the kingdoms of Cyprus and Jerusalem according to her birthright . The following year Philibert's father passed away, so that the couple could call themselves King and Queen of Cyprus, Jerusalem and Armenia. Yolanda died in 1499 at the age of twelve. Her heiress became the Princess Charlotte of Naples, later Comtesse de Laval. Philibert continued to hold onto the throne of Cyprus and Jerusalem despite the death of his first wife. His second wife Margarete was the only legitimate daughter of the later Emperor Maximilian I of the House of Habsburg and widow of the Spanish heir to the throne Juan . Philibert thus concluded an important alliance with the Habsburgs when he married in December 1501 in the Romainmôtier monastery . Margarete and Philibert had a happy marriage for three years. While his wife was realizing the political ideas she had developed in Spain in the duchy, Philbert pursued his interests, such as hunting. This also led to his untimely death. He drank hot from a cold spring, was attacked by shivers of fever, to which he ultimately succumbed and thus made his wife a widow for the second time.

During Philibert's reign, Savoy became due to the conquests of Louis XII. in Italy surrounded by French possessions.

When the duke died at the age of 24, he was followed by his younger half-brother Karl in 1504 , as both of Philibert's marriages had remained childless.
